I used to laugh at keto ... (WARNING: Long post)
35M / SW 310 / CW 260 / GW 220, 5’11 Long lurking here, I made an account just for this post. Honestly guys, I used to laugh at keto and all these “fad diets.” Some nutritionists scolded me for following the diet and one became enraged and stopped. Story time. I am 35 years old, I am WM, I am single and grew up in a home with horrible nutritional values. My mom was always sick and rarely cooked, when she did the food was basically garbage. My dad had a hard time keeping the house in order and feeding the children. I never learned to cook due to limited abilities at home. The depression started alongside a huge geek weight gain during my elementary school years. Because I didn’t know how to cook anything other than pasta, tacos, reheat canned food, frozen meals, etc., my health was getting worse and worse. I was always the heaviest kid in the class until I met some of my “older” friends in high school. In my graduating year I weighed 270 pounds, mostly fat with some muscle hidden somewhere. I don’t remember what my BMI was, sorry. I was hit with a back injury this year at work. Repetitive movements mixed with being severely overweight, I registered 310. My self esteem was shattered and had been for a while. One night while browsing Reddit, I came across a post from one of the AWESOME members here. Friend was like me, super heavy, depressed, on a horrible diet, etc. What caught my eye was the before / after photo. The guy’s got JACKED! I could have sworn it was a spam post for “buy this supplement! Blah blah blah”. I read more and more of your posts and I checked your posts. I started to take a look at the whole group. You guys are incredibly supportive and informative! This is the ONLY group I’ve come across here that has so much love and compassion on all of Reddit. Now, let’s get back to the present. I started my keto journey in June 2020, by the end of August 2020 I had lost 52 pounds! Lots of beef and broccoli, keto chili, beef tips with cauliflower rice, and other keto soups. My self esteem started to rebound, the back pain subsided a bit, but that’s a completely different story (I’m still waiting for the surgery) and my appetite had changed. I grabbed an Instant Pot to help me cook (a bit of a cheat, but it works great for me) and started preparing the food. My average food batch produced 6 to 12 meals. I would have an Atkins shake for breakfast, use an app to track my calories and carbs (I doubled and did the calorie count too). I joined a gym and started using the treadmill every time I didn’t feel like walking around the lake. The average distance was 3 to 6 miles 3 to 5 days a week. My average carb count per day was 13-15 carbs, 1100-1800 calories (before training it dropped more), and a gallon to a gallon and a half of water. I put down all the sodas, teas, juices, etc. and I concentrated more on the water than ever in my life. Some people have told me that I was basically starving my body 700-1000 calories (after burning myself during training), however I was super full and couldn’t eat any more! I wanted to thank this community for all the love and support they provide to all who are trying to change for the better. Due to my increased self-confidence, I decided to enroll in school and pursue my PA that I had dreamed of for years. I realize that I can concentrate more than I used to, the brain fog is slowly loosening and I am doing better in school than ever. The only thing that changed was my weight loss. You heard about the dreaded “Freshman 15” … well … I had the opposite effect and the “Freshman 50”. I’M FREAKIN STOKED! I got off the train at this point but will start the diet again on Monday. I will have to take some photos and post the progress at some point. I am open to all advice and comments. If you need someone to talk to you, keep you on track, or just someone to lean on when those cravings hit … hit me!
