Grapefruit diet: pros and cons
The grapefruit diet, also known as the Hollywood diet or the Mayo diet, has a long history in the United States. It has been around since 1930 and has been known as a rapid weight loss method until now with many variations and the only essential thing that cannot be changed is half a serving of grapefruit before each meal. Grapefruit is claimed to have fat-burning properties, and with the diet that encourages meat intake, this combination of high-cholesterol foods with grapefruit appears to burn fat faster.
The basis of the diet itself has been identified as a low carbohydrate and protein diet with an average of 800 to 1000 calories per day. On a diet of less than 1000 calories per day, most people will still lose weight even without consuming grapefruits, but it is still unknown how half a serving of grapefruit before each meal enhances the weight loss process. He points out that so far, no scientific study has been able to demonstrate the power of grapefruit to burn fat.
Here are some examples of eating plans based on the grapefruit diet:
Breakfast
- 1/2 serving of grapefruit or 4 oz of unsweetened grapefruit juice
- Two eggs, any cooking style.
- Two slices of bacon, half cooked.
- You can also add black coffee.
lunch
- Half a serving of grapefruit or 4 oz of unsweetened grapefruit juice.
- Salad, any kind of dressing, any size.
- Meat, of any kind, unlimited quantity.
Dinner
- Half a serving of grapefruit or 4 oz of unsweetened grapefruit juice.
- Meat, of any kind, unlimited quantity.
- Any red or green vegetables cooked with seasoning or salad. A cup of coffee or tea.
Snack at bedtime
8 ounces of skim milk with sweetener, the alternative is a glass of tomato juice.
Snacks are not allowed between meals.
Pros
- It consists of 12 days of diet with 2 days off, so you have 2 days to eat whatever you want.
- The program offers a fairly rapid weight loss: 18 pounds in the first 18 days.
- For those who don’t like the idea of going to the gym, this program does not have any instruction on exercise or training.
- Affordable and simple.
Cons
- It is unhealthy to eat too much acidic citrus throughout the day for long periods of time. It will increase the level of acidity in your stomach and increase the likelihood of having stomach pain, gastritis, or even ulcerative diseases. If you suffer from any of these or other ailments of the digestive tract, you should stop consuming acidic foods such as grapefruit, lemons or oranges.
- The program eliminates the necessary things in a balanced diet, such as carbohydrates.
- Limited varieties of foods restrict you from improving your eating habits and can cause boredom, monotony, and taste fatigue.
- You will regain weight as soon as you stop the diet.
- Unlike other citrus fruits, grapefruits are known for their interactions with some medications such as felodipine, a drug used to control hypertension. Recent studies show that felodipine in combination with grapefruit juice can cause toxic effects.
- If you start this diet, monitor how you feel each day, there are reports that some people experienced running at the beginning of the program, and this can lead to dehydration if not treated quickly.
- There are opinions that grapefruit inhibits the production of insulin from the pancreas. If you have diabetes, you can even go into a coma because your insulin level drops suddenly.
- Here is a list of medications that can be unpredictable and dangerous when combined with grapefruit juice:
- Statins (cholesterol medications): lovastatin (Mevacor), atorvastatin Lipitor, Simvastatin Zocor, simvastatin / ezetimibe Vytorin
- Antihistamines: Ebastine, Seldane
- Calcium channel blockers (blood pressure medications): nimodipine (Nimotop), felodipine (nitrendipine, Plendil), pranidipine, nisoldipine (Sular), nicardipine (Cardene), verapamil (Verelan)
- Psychiatric medications: buspirone (Buspar), triazolam (Halcion), carbamazepine (Tegretol), diazepam (Valium), midazolam (Versed), sertraline (Zoloft)
- Intestinal medications: cisapride, recalled from the US market (Propulsid)
- Immunosuppressants: cyclosporine (Neoral), (tacrolimus) Prograf
- Pain medication: methadone
- Impotence medication (erectile dysfunction): sildenafil (Viagra)
- HIV drug: saquinavir (Invirase) Antiarrhythmics: amiodarone (Cordarone)
Note that you don’t need to understand all of these medications, just check with your doctor beforehand if you plan to start this diet.
conclusion
With so many drops and side effects, doing this long-term is not recommended. There are people who claim to do this for years with good results, but you should not try your luck just to lose a few pounds of weight. Remember that there are many weight loss programs that offer a healthy long-term solution and quick results.
