How do you know when you are in ketosis on Medifast? I'll tell you

I often have people who email me wanting to know how they can tell if they have reached ketosis or not. Because one of the goals of medifast is to consume a low enough amount of carbohydrates and calories and a high enough amount of protein for your body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates. Most people want to reach this state as soon as possible because that is when they start to see the results. So how do you know if you have reached these levels? Well, you can see your physical symptoms, you can get tested, or you can do both. I will discuss more on this matter in the next article.

The physical symptoms you can see with ketosis once you have been on Medifast for more than 3 to 4 days: First of all, if you’re still pretty good and careful with your lean, green foods, you should be able to go into ketosis for the first week. Many people see this happening sometime around days 3-5. But sometimes it takes a little longer if you are exercising a lot.

The first thing you may notice is that your diet is costing you more. Cravings may decrease and you may not be as hungry. You may also discover that you have a little more energy. I also heard people say they noticed a change in their breath. They have said that his breath had an almost fruity and sweet smell and / or taste.

Using strips to test for ketosis or not: If you doubt these symptoms or just want to be sure that you have finally reached this state, you can use small strips to detect ketones in your urine. They are often sold with names like ketostix or ketone strips. Basically, you pee at the end of the stick and then wait for the time indicated in the instructions. (This usually takes 15-30 seconds. It doesn’t take long to get results.) Usually you are looking for the strips to change color. The strips come with instructions that will show you what color you are looking for. But with many, you want the strip to change from purple to deep pink to indicate it’s in ketosis. You can get the strips at most drugstores and supermarkets. They are often found in the diabetic section. You don’t need a recipe for them, but they are sometimes kept behind the counter, depending on the store.

What happens if you don’t see the color change? Well there are some possibilities. The first would be that it still doesn’t show ketones in the urine. You can try checking again in a few days. Sometimes if you work hard, your muscles will need ketones for fuel, and therefore they won’t be in your urine. You may also have been drinking so much water that your urine is too dilute to change color.

I understand that ketosis is really where you want to be on medifast and I know we all want to validate that we are there. But the strips really are a guide. If you are seeing some of the symptoms and the weight is dropping as it should, there really is no reason to over-emphasize the test results or let them stress you out. What is really important is getting the results on the scale, not the strips, although they can help give you some peace of mind if you need it.
