Get off your butt and make some real resolutions: to lose weight and more
Do we really bother writing more New Year’s resolutions? I mean really write them down. Just like sitting down, categorizing our life and goals, planning some desired outcomes … blah, blah, blah.
It all sounds a little too much, right?
And a little cheesy anyway.
Also, no one keeps resolutions! They are almost made to break.
Perhaps the reason he never succeeds in his New York plans is that he doesn’t deserve it.
I’m not saying you don’t deserve success.
But seriously: do you really expect to lose weight, get in shape, find a partner, write a book, run the Kokoda trail backwards or anything else that spells ‘success’ for you?
WITHOUT CREATING A PLAN ?!
Seriously?!
As Anthony Robbins would say: “You have to MAKE it happen!”
Even those people who appear to be perpetually lucky are not only successful in the face. They live their lives in such a way that they see opportunities everywhere, and they really go out there and try.
Are you one of them?
Why not?
Maybe it’s worth a little more than a laugh with your friends this year.
“I bet I won’t get past January”
‘That’s nothing, last year I didn’t even make it to January 2!’
Haha.
You know what they say. And if you don’t, well, I’ll tell you.
‘You don’t plan and you plan to fail’
Ah, very true. Spoken through my many years of wisdom, of course! Joking
But really, it makes sense, doesn’t it?
And I have certainly noticed that the goals that I really think, plan and really believe are possible are those that are realized.
I dare you to prove me wrong. After all, do you really want to get to the end of another January (or worse, next December) knowing that you still haven’t managed (why not dream?) Create a new you?
Here are my tips for doing just that.
1. Visualize – yes, yes, you have heard it before. Maybe there is a reason. Works. If you can’t see yourself doing something, or have it, or be it, how can you really believe in your ability to do it? And if you don’t believe it, you’re setting yourself up for failure. You have already decided. You’ve probably already made up some excuses too. Then visualize. In detail. Write it down, or draw, or think about it daily, or tell everyone you meet. Just do it.
2. Create. You have to believe to achieve! But sometimes it’s not that simple, is it? How do you believe in your ability if you don’t believe? Here are two great options. First, start telling yourself what you will be (fit, a non-smoker, happy, full of energy, rich, you understand the idea …). Do it every day, preferably both in writing and verbally. Sooner or later, the message really assimilates and you begin to “create your own reality” by living as if you were that person already.
3. The power of now. This is based on the last step. Believing in your ability to succeed is only part of the picture. What if you thought you were already successful? Take to get in top shape. If you were already there (and apart from a celebration party at first!) Wouldn’t you exercise most days? Eat well? Take care of your body from the inside out? So what if you started doing that now? Start believing that your goal is already reality. Write it down, say it, shout it from the rooftops, but do it in the present tense.
4. Ask why. If the power of now is part 2 of belief, then this is part three. I have this idea from Jim Labadie, a mentor I work with in the United States. These are affirmations. Except Jim calls them affirmations, because you’re shaping your future. Says so. Instead of telling yourself (or writing) who you are (insert target), you ask yourself “why”. Why am I so happy? Why am I the fittest person I know? Why do I have such a loving relationship? If you ask why, your brain has to find the answer, eventually. Especially if you ask why frequently. And sooner or later you will start to follow that solution. Whether you realize it or not.
5. Plan. This one is a little bit simpler than the rest. I don’t mean easy. Because you still have to follow the plan! But it is vitally important that you have a plan. Three steps is usually enough. Start with something you can do today (you don’t need to wait until January 1). The next step should be a little bigger and perhaps involve some setup: hiring a personal trainer, buying a book on how to change your mind. Finally, choose something that is more “big picture”. Example: follow-up for one month. Be sure to plan a reward for the end of that month! You may need to redo your plan monthly as it will surely change or become more detailed.
It’s easy to say it will work things out next year. But it’s funny how fast a year can go by.
